There's nothing coincidental about the Big Bang. It results from a Big Crunch every time.

On the other hand, it bespeaks little humility to pronounce certain questions unanswerable, since---in doing so---one rather high-and-mightily declares the question of whether they are answerable to be answerable.

The strong anthropic principle seems stretched to its limit, but never goes away.

Did you ever read Martin Rees's "Just Six Numbers"? If not, I recommend it, though it may be a little out of date now. It's quite short, too, which suited me. It's a thorough investigation of things like this, and still leaves the question open.

The fact that such questions are unanswerable puts human beings in their place. What's creepy is that so many eminent scientists think they are answerable. It is tragic that their curiosity depends on such a quest. The greatest scientists of all possess more humility in the presence of Nature.

As goes for the Big Bang and the curious fact that the sun and the moon are positioned at precisely such distances from Earth that they appear congruent when viewed from down here.

I actually picked it up at a dermatologist’s office, which made me wonder what it was doing there in the first place. Only adds to its creepiness.

I remember this cover. My brother in law is an Optometrist and had a copy of this at his home. It was creepy then and still is.
