Maybe because I'm an expat I have more extreme feelings, but what said it all was an article that appeared right after the Nov 2008 election entitled "It's OK To Be An American Again." Plus which I see people walking around here wearing Obama t-shirts and telling me that it's OK to be an American again.

I have no idea if he's the best or the worst thing for the country, but he certainly cuts a great figure as president, and I hope he succeeds and gets his phiz chiseled into Rushmore some day.

A nice job of summing up how thankless the job is--and the tradeoffs you have to make to get elected. Remember when he and HRC were mortal enemies representing opposite ends of the spectrum (at least according to the rhetoric du jour).

I think if he accomplishes anything it will be a minor miracle considering what he inherited and has to juggle in terms of vested interests and overinflated expectations.

The bottom line is that he is the best thing that could have happened to the country at this point and we should give him time to succeed.

Not sure if I used the term metaphor correctly. Broadly interpreted, I guess a metaphor is simply a chunk of speech or writing that symbolizes something, so a title that doesn't match the subsequent disquisition could be taken as symbolizing a broken promise.

Not sure who owns word press, but site stats are provided by Google. Google is more powerful than the government.

i'm with andreas on the upswing of the president, obama has perseverance. thanks for fixing my italics.

i do not mind typos, but "wrong" word and terrible syntax are painful reminders. and since gratuitous use of metaphors is a no-no, i can't hope to pass off my word soup as creative use of metaphor. :(

saw the pun Barobameter... but title "metaphor" - my ass-phasia :-) is ironic title what you meant?

if so, "irony is wasted on the stupid" which may be why i missed it.

creepy - mac, OH, safari, is wordpress owned by the government? what else do you know?

neurologist today, fingers crossed.

Title does not match content? Of course not. The headline itself is a broken promise. Don't you see the brilliant metaphor I inadvertently employed there?

The ABC article you referenced mentions 502 (!) specific campaign promises by our Chief Teleprompteer. I wonder if they counted the promised pooch for Sasha and Malia as one of the 91 fulfilled ones.

Regarding readership, I do get visitor statistics for each page on my site--hence I know that someone in Aphasiatown, OH, is using Safari on a Mac--but I have no idea how many visitors actually read any of the content provided as opposed to, say, merely drop by to to throw tootsie rolls at the screen or to heat their living rooms with the warmth emanating from the perennial torch in my banner.

I fixed your italics. Your aphasia appears to be a misdiagnosed case of italicitis.

the "brav0" goes to you for posting.

can you tell how many read your post, or only see the reply?

my intelligence is in tact, but aphasia makes reading and writing hard. this will likely take me an hour to write and may end up "word soup". i read your blog yesterday but could not find the words to respond. be gentle with your reply.

you have effectively deployed your wit to sketch the tragedy of a slogan and a rhetorical strategy (“change”), of a man and a presidency — and possibly even of a dog. :)

your title does not match the content. most of your issues with Obama seem to have began before the first year. if you trust ABC online there is an article "key promises, one year later" that breaks it down, 91 fulfilled, 33 partial, 14 broken, 87 pending...

then you could successfully cut the blog @ In the interest of full disclosure, I did not vote for Obama because you deal mostly with the election process.

unsolicited suggestions from aphasia town, and a loyal reader.

i did enjoy reading everyone's comments on cheri's blog about the "french voice".

Yes, I'm using WordPress, albeit the self-hosted version, so I got to design my own theme. But that shouldn't impact upon the displaying of avatars. Cheri's avatar displays just fine on my blog, and she's using your version of WP.

You may be a words guy, but you are affiliated with a publication whose name suggests a heavy emphasis on numbers. Hence your defense in this matter is tenuous at best. Besides, no one "made" you divide one year by four nor four years by one. You volunteered for the burdensome task, and the entire Cyberquill team applauds you for trying:

The Avatar: You're not using WordPress, are you?

1/3 v 1/4: Oops. This is what happens when you make a words guy divide one year by four.

Obviously, I was wrong. It is 1/5.

Truman set fire to a park?

Reagan was also valleying along after one year in office. George W., on the other hand, was flying high at around 80% approval, albeit buoyed by 9/11.

In the words of JFK (the man, not the airport), there is no school for presidents. It's all learning on the job. Electing Hillary would have been a rare opportunity to get an experienced president into the White House.

Only 1/3 through his first term? You mean 1/4, or are you predicting Obama will resign after three years and go on a book tour like that Alaskan moose hunter?

No idea why your avatar (the little pick next to your name, not the movie) doesn't display on my blog. I guess it should. At least I don't see it on my end here.

That post is 3,400 words long.

To make that into a "briefing" (3 pages) in The Economist, you would have had to cut it by 500 words.

My iPhone ran out of battery.

That said, you have effectively deployed your wit to sketch the tragedy of a slogan and a rhetorical strategy ("change"), of a man and a presidency -- and possibly even of a dog.

But he's only 1/3 of his way through his first term. This descent was inevitable, given the heights of coolness from which he started. Truman had a similar low at this point, which is when he fired MacArthur. But he came back by doing big and bold things.

My guess is that from here, it's a valley, then an ascent.
