Hi Peter,

What a great line…”in the fatalistic spirit so characteristic of that city..” We (my husband Ron and I) enjoyed the You Tube clip of Hans Moser. Thanks for that link.

Perhaps you could blog about the topic above. I’d like to know how Vienna is fatalistic.

Off the cuff, I couldn’t tell you how Vienna is fatalistic myself, even though I was born there. What I do know is that the city has that reputation, and it is certainly expressed in the quality of its music, i.e., slightly whiny yet accepting of one’s fate, a let’s-enjoy-it-while-it-lasts sort of attitude as if the situation was hopeless, but not serious (as opposed to serious but not hopeless).

Vienna and New York City are the only two big cities I’m intimately familar with, and I don’t really see much of a difference as far as overall attitude. One runs into the same types of people and behavior patterns over here as over there. Would be interesting to do a detailed comparative study of both cities from a psychological perspective. Will I be the one doing it? Um…

The poem is actually the lyrics of a Wienerlied, a Viennese folk song, a genre my dad loved. This particular one was played at his funeral. It's about how there's not point in getting upset about whatever life throws at us, because God always knows why He does what He does, even though we may not understand most of it. A Viennese gospel tune, of sorts, written in the fatalistic spirit so characteristic of that city. (Here's a short clip of the chorus of the tune, sung--or let's say "interpreted"--by Hans Moser, one of the greatest Viennese character actors of Austria's golden movie era.)

I wish I could read the German poem you included. Your father was born in 1930, the same year as my mother (who is still hanging in there). From the delightful gallery of photos you included for us to view, I see a man who lived his life to the fullest.

His eyes tell the story. What a handsome person. What a character.

This time of year, I miss my father every day. He passed in 1995 and I don't think I have really gotten over it.

Thanks for sharing.
